Fancy Ring - A DIY

A while back i went thrift shopping saw these really old shoes that still had the nice looking embellishment intact. I asked the guy at the stall if i could pay for just the embellishments and he agreed and so i did. When i first bought them i wasn't sure what i was going to do with them. I thought i would make earrings but i wasn't sure so i just kept them. Well last weekend i made a ring and here is how to make your own.

For this kind of ring you will need very little:

Any item of your choice, mine were the shoe embellishments

You will need just one of  them. I broke off the clips that are used to clip it to the shoes so i had a flat surface on which to attach the ring base

A good ring base. you could spray paint a silver ring base with gold paint to make sure they match but i didn't bother

Apply glue to both and hold them together for really long just to make sure it sticks.

Leave the ring out to dry properly for a minute or so

Voila you have your ring. This ring kinds looks like a double ring when you wear it. I love it.

The point here is to use almost anything and transform it into a cool item. The next time you're shopping and see an interesting but useless looking item, grab it . You never know where your creative juices will lead you.

 Happy royal wedding  day.

On painful beauty

I spent the the day yesterday plaiting my hair. The objective wasn't so much to look beautiful as it was to take a break from combing my natural kinks (which i think God did not make for combing). I tried to make it as comfortable as possible for myself by asking the lady to come home. To distract myself from the pain i watched dollhouse the whole time but still it hurt. I am finished plaiting my hair now  but i know sleeping will not be an easy feat. Every time i do this i tell myself its the last time, i guess its what every mother of four said about each baby right after pushing it.

justin bieberish ..maybe

rock star huh

one with the five head

And so i gotta ask. How far in terms of pain would you go to look good? Any memorable experiences. do share.
Happy Easter

MAURICE KIRYA - The Interview

Maurice Kirya is an award winning mwoyo (Ugandan soul)  musician. His first album MISUBAAWA is a great listen and will have you asking for more. He just concluded an RFI tour of West Africa which was wrapped up with a concert in Paris. Last week i had a chance to date interview this lovely musician. This will be a long read but well worth it. play the videos at the end as u read.

How would you describe your music ?
I call my music mwoyo which is the luganda word for soul, It's a fusion of many things but it sounds allot like soul so i call it that. I see myself as the urban African. Sometimes people expect you to step onto stage in a huge kitengi. Yes i am African but also urban.

Growing up,what were your musical influences?
I was influenced allot by the music that was always playing in the house . The likes of Stevie wonder, Rachael and Richard senkebejje, ABBA, Michael Jackson. I was also influenced by the music my brothers played which included yellow man, shabaranks and alot of other reggae music

Fondest musical childhood memories
There are a couple but one distinct one was way back in Namugongo girls school. When i was younger, i looked like a girl and so my sister would dress me up and sneak me into her dormitory on visitation days. A group of girls would gather around while i sang for them. I also remember playing the piano at home. My family is a very musical one. Two of my brothers are also artists

What has your musical journey been like?
I started singing really early on . I experimented with different styles until i found myself doing mwoyo.I remember walking around with my guitar asking to play at any event.wedding , birthday, funeral and sometimes they chased me away but when they let me , i sung my heart out. Myself and a group of other musicians would perform at DVD for free. Those were fun but interesting time  .It was hard for people to take my music seriously, they always said "ebyo byabazungu"(that's white people music). It took forever for me to get the recognition i deserved. I worked really hard and eventually people started to come round. I then started the Maurice kirya experience a monthly concert featuring other alternative style musicians. Its been a long interesting journey and finally reaping from it is amazing. I have great structural support around me and the band is a great part of the music.

On winning the RFI award discovery award 2010
Over 500 people entered the competition and i won, of course i was excited. The RFI discovery award had been won in the past by artists from francophone countries and to be the first Anglo musician to win was an honor. I am blessed to have the opportunity to represent my country.

Are you now rich?
Yes, I know people say you have to be humble but fact is i won a.....prize and now I'm a little rich. I have worked so hard to get here i think its only fair that i enjoy it.

Tell us about your just concluded tour of west Africa.
The tour was amazing: playing to French speaking audiences that knew the lyrics to the luganda songs. That was just nice to watch. I had the opportunity to visit so many countries and experience life like never before. I experienced golden sunsets, crossed rivers on small boats and visited orphanages in the different countries. A very important part of the tour was encouraging and engaging young people and hopefully i inspired some. We played  24 concerts in 14 countries in 2 months so of course i am tired and my sleeping pattern is messed up but the experience was great.

Can we now say you have arrived?
No not at all , i believe there is still so much for me to do. There is always more for an artist. This is only the beginning

What would you like to bring to the Ugandan music?
I want to put Uganda and Africa on the map musically and also reflect artists as positive members of society and not just the nuisances we are sometimes.

Any other stuff you're good at?
I am actor and dancer. Maurice starred in the Oscar winning film in the last king of Scotland, even though i only had a small part i am more than proud of that achievement. I have also starred in Scenes of the parents, Live Joseph and the painter.
I am also a seasoned painter. I  used to draw and sell my really not so good paintings for money to pay my school fees when i was younger. it is something I'm not so good at but i really enjoy.

On past working experience
My first job was an assistant on construction sites. This may sound like some fancy job but its actually not. Things were really bad financially at home and my mother asked me to go to a building site and work as a porter, helping out the actual builders. i was paid 3000 shs a day but it taught me about hard work
I was also a farmer at some point. In an effort to raise money and teach us the values of hard work , my mum divided the garden into patched for me and my siblings and each was given their own land to till.In mine i grew sweet potatoes a maize which i sold for money. I also made paper bags that i sold to restaurants. I paid my school fees through school from an early age.

What is your status? listen up ladies
I am currently single and enjoying that. i love women and what they are about.

After being probed on the matter by yours truly
Well there are a couple of ladies i find interesting particularly one i connected with in west Africa but i feel like to take things further would be wasting her time. I am on tour and not settled and who would want a boyfriend like that. I don't really have a specific taste in women, i just love them all. I could hit it off with just about anyone.

Are you monogamous? i was curious about the "I love women"
Yes of course. When i am in a committed i am completely monogamous. I however enjoy to hang out with ladies and sometimes if the activities are called dates then they are. I love being in the company of a beautiful woman. date or no date.

What do you ride in?
I drive a 1971 golfswagen beetle. The car actually belonged to former Ugandan president Idi Amin. The car has let me down with  girls before but i love it. I am into vintage things. I have this pendant from Egypt that i have had for over 10 years and the guy that sold it to me told me it was really old.

What are your the plans for 2011?
I will be playing in Washington, New York and Arizona with Jordin Sparks. The second leg of the RFI tour kicks off in a week but there are plans for Uganda too. The maurice Kirya experience will be back this year and  also a Maurice kirya concert.

What are your other hobbies?
I like to catch movies at the cinema, meet up with my friends and hang out, swimming and im a video game addict.

If i ever - Maurice Kirya

Misuubawa - Maurice Kirya

Boda Boda - Maurice Kirya

Catching up with Maurice was much fun but also very inspiring. There is a lesson on hard work and persistence from hearing his story.Patience and hard work really do pay, eventually. I say whatever your dreams or plans are ,go for them and don't loose sight of the vision no matter what the present may look like
Visit the Maurice Kirya's website for more on him and support his music HERE

Kanye West rocks womens wear

Kanye took this meterosexual business a notch higher. Check him out performing at coachella wearing a a beautiful shirt from womens wear Celine spring 2011 ready to wear collection. And then my mind ran and imagined a woman in mens underwear (the one with space for the package) as shorts. ... I say he looks fine and he might have actually worn it better than the model, check out his necklace, beautiful huh? Anyways  what think you of this move?

the one about body image issues

We all have recurring body image moments here and there, at least i know i do. Its true there are no perfect people in the world and isn't God a genius for making it that way. I was 17 when i started a "not so in love" relationship with my body. i thought i was a little too big, too hairy here and there and basically not accepting of myself . Anyways i guess adolescence was soon over and i grew up to love and understand my body . that is the best thing that any young person could do for themselves, to love the body that you re in. So what if you re thin, fat, tall, dark, light, short , scratch that in the end you re human and loving what God has given you is the best thing you could do for yourself.  I know that feeling of constant anxiety from wanting to change parts of you and sometimes panicking because it is just impossible. Honestly i tell you it is so much easier and better loving yourself than trying to change your body. There is a sense of relief one gets from not caring about their stretch marks...I wish everyone would have that feeling, of course there are those little moments  but overall its an amazing thing to love yourself.  Please note that I'm not encouraging that you abandon all care and look like you sleep in your car...no loving your body means taking care of it, keep it fit and healthy.
I say practice, practice until it comes natural to accept your flaws and in the end you will love them. in life there are more important things than your body and what it looks like, and spending allot of time preoccupying oneself with body image is actually selfish.

Today i just thought i would share about this and i hope that somebody is inspired.

One For Street Fashion

street fashion blogs and sites are some of my sources of fashion inspiration. international fashion trends and designers' takes are all good but nothing beats personalised interpretation of fashion and individual style. that i find even better. The looks may get blasted for or ooohs and aahhh as people oogle at the creativity but in the end they are personal and that counts for alot. checking out street fashion blogs is like seing many people's style blogs in one .I wanna thank all those who take their time to feed  us with fashion inspiration or faspiration as i like to call it. These days i am more aware of people as i walk on the streets. their clothes, their attention to detail on a girls top, the way one ties their belt, the colours, the accesories, hair, bags  etc..I would like to start photographing them and sharing with the world but untill i buy a good camera and develope unknown skill , im gona reccomend you check out these sites,
cinder and skylark in Cape town
face hunter,
nyanzi
the sartorialist
vanessa jackman
The list could go on and on but check these out and you will find that many give links to other street fashion sites and the experience continues thereon. Im really happy to post this and without sounding pan africanist( which i am)i wanna ask african people to pick a leaf. i know i will be trying. Also if you know of any street fashion sites in Africa besides cinder and skylark in Cape town , share the link.id love to know

5 things to do before 2012

1.. have to learn French or at least a little. way back in school i chose German over french because i just like to be different and everyone was going for french . now that I'm older Ive given in to my desire to learn french. I'm always so envious of people who are bilingual. well i can speak like 4 languages but only English is international so french class here i come

2.. Learn to eat food really slowly .  this is a stupid one but i just cant get myself to eat food slowly  especially when I'm alone. when I'm with other people its really easy because we have conversation and i can forget about eating . when I'm alone its like I'm a woman on a mission and i just have to make it .. funny enough if its sweet stuff like chocolate i like to take my time.

3.. exercise a little more . this is an old one Ive talked about before but i guess the more i talk about it the more i feel obliged to live up to my promises. even if they are to cyber people i do not know in person.

4.. buy myself more presents . i am going to treat myself more than often... shoes, nice accessories, food that i will eat slowly . I'm loving me already so I'm gonna show it allot more

5.. Travel travel travel. i already have two trips planed , one in November and another June . cant say where  because i do not wanna jinx but yes I'm an aspiring globe trotter .not even brokeness will stop me . i will take a bus if i have to . Ive been to  Burundi before by bus , it is almost a two day trip....my butt was paralysed when i got there but it was worth it...
