Nappyversary and wedding hair

I don't have a BAA (big ass Afro) yet and some hair days are better than others but its been a fun journey staying away from relaxers for a whole year.

Now i need some help picking out a hairstyle for my wedding. I'm thinking two strand twists with a flower or feather accessory in my hair or even a band. Either that or relax it, hold it in a neat bun. I have also considered cutting it off completely .I need your help so please consider this your official invite to the hair style planing sub committee.

Ive been super psyched since i found out NNEKA will be playing in Kampala next week thursday so you can imagine my uber excitement when i found out she was playing in Nairobi on a night when i would be there. As expected from any sane person, i went to the concert and what a fun night. I finally got to meet my cyber friend patricia and so many other cool peoples. I met up with some old friends too and a hell of a good time was had by all.

If you must ask ...the answer is yes yes yes the concert was the GRREEEAAATTT

If you are in Kampala this coming thursday then your feet should be at the Alliance Francais gate before 8pm. Tshilla, Keko, Ife and Irene from the Uneven band will be playing that night too and the cover fee is a cartoon 5000ush. I will be there because for some things, one just cant get enough of. And now some Nneka for you to enjoy. My favorite "Africans"

The back to school party

So someone rightly decided it would be interesting to get together Kampala's drunkards to party in school uniform. At the party one had to show up in school uniform or pay an entrance fee.Ugandans including moi hate to pay for things and we never disappoint with themed parties so dress up we did. The party was complete with alcohol and food served in plastic cups and plates. There were metallic beds for those who wanted to sit and high school lingo was being used everywhere.

A few observations were made

Most ladies utilized the opportunity to wear their children's or younger siblings' uniforms and get away with it.

Ugandans are very creative. I don't have pictorial evidence but people came up with the most interesting renditions of school uniforms. There was also a school nurse, askari etc

Then there were the bizarre ones like the two boys i saw wearing dresses and socks...very weird but fun to look at.

Men really do not age. While the guys looked like they could pass for real high school students, the girls looked like mature entry students...unfair

Wedding dress shopping

I spent the better part of Saturday afternoon oohhing and aaahing at wedding gowns and nope they were not on me but on my partner in crime, a friend that is getting married in september bride. It was mostly shopping for her and ordering for me. I have never dreamt about my wedding dress or my wedding alone for that matter. When i dedicates a few moments to those thoughts i always pictured, small intimate simple but alal i live in Uganda and that will not happen...ok that a topic for another day

Anyway my friend tried on three dresses and i just one. There is something about trying on a wedding dress...it makes everything so surreal. the idea of starting a life with someone and this huge step you're making and the dress in which you will be taking those vows..... It can also make you feel like a little child that is finally looming into a woman, you're excited about it but you're also a bit scared. It can be a roller coaster of emotions. My friend was so emotional she swang between crying and screaming and i joined in on the party. Anyway i narrowed down what my dress was going to look like a few weeks ago but since i do not want to hassle with tailors on this one i'm buying the closest likeness i can find from a designer and importing it. It is not exactly my dream dress but i love it and its perfect. I wonder if i would be jinxing if i showed you a pic but anyway its beautiful.

From this little trip to the store i made two observations

1.Every bride is beautiful in their dress.(whichever their choice is) There were a couple of other brides to be and i swear all the dresses looked gorgeous on all of them and i have since concluded that all brides no matter their dress look beautiful.

2. Big dresses are cliche for a reason. I have never fancied Cinderella like wedding gowns or anything that would need me to kick or carry while i walk down the aisle but now i see why everyone loves them. They have that fairy tale wonder like effect and who doesn't love that... I saw some brides try on some dresses i know i would have to be shot first before wearing and to my surprise they looked gorgeous.. Now i get the big dress thing. Im still not wearing one though ...

Just curious. How many 2012 brides do we have on here?

Like i have for the past few years i mumbled something about getting healthy/fit when asked about my resolutions this year. This time i am taking this very seriously. I have decided that ABS and toned bodies are sexy and i want me one of those. I have already started on this little project (i have run twice in a space of four days) baby steps for now and here is my plan to achieve the much desired look

Run/power walk 45 - 60 minutes thrice a week
Zumba zumba and more zumba as much as i can
I cannot really commit to healthy eating because bad food is my friend but i will try to drink lots of water and stay away from carbs. wish me luck.

I am not looking for fitness buddies but feel free to join in the gang of women world over that are doing something about their bodies. And now behold this is gonna be me in four months...whoop whoop

I do not remember ever saying doctor, teacher, pilot, nurse or any of the other cool professions kids always wanted. I was the kid who said a different profession every time. Here are a few i remember.

The weather woman on CNN.

I was around 9 or so when i wanted to do this. I was so sure it was my destiny i even practced in the mirror and a to fake audience(my family)..I liked how the screens in the background would change the locations while the host told us about the weather..

An actor on generations

Do you remember Noah, Kahaya's brother? In my dreams i would play Noah's on screen flame, the chemistry would be too much it would have to be continued off set. We would fall in love and live happily ever after. Needless to say it didnt happen and my acting career died a sad death. That phase though explains my thing for bald headed men with a beard, think Djmon Honsou, Edris Elba...these are adult versions of Noah.

A international model

If youve met me then you know there is no chance in hell this was going to happen, I am only 57 and have a hint of a fat gene and dont quite have the X factor. To the adolescent hyped16 year old me however those are only minor challenges to overcome. I did some modelling locally (sob sob) untill i decided to give up and let the Aleks of this world rule. I am now happy model scouting and have such an eye for a good model i wonder why i didnt use the skills on myself and saved myself the heartache. PS: The models on fashion TV with their world sized gawky eyes and bad eastern European accents annoy me, they are living my life. Backstage at Valentino.."tonight we fly to paris and then back to milan and then tokyo.....bla bla bla

A Shrink

I don't quite remember where this came from but i wanted to be that lady with the glasses who you told about your problems only for her to always say "and how does that make you feel??". I did go on to study psychology for my undergrad but did not major in the field. My friends say i am a good listener so im kinda still shrinking part time.

A Wedding planner

This one was more recent and i actually had one big client. This stupid client decided to postpone and later cancel his wedding and with it burst my bubble. Its four months to my own wedding and i have ot done a thing. I guess i was never going to be good at this one huh

I currently work as a magazine editor and working on something for TV. IN the past i have worked as a social worker in an IDP camp, an HIV counselor at a clinic, a youth projects coordinator and like a thousand other things. Im interested in so many things im not sure i can narrow it down to a few.

When i asked this young man backstage at Swahili Fashion week if i could take his picture. He didn't just willingly oblige but went ahead to pose for me

Men who play dress up...in real life

It is the norm for women to spend hours planning and finally deciding on what to wear to a night out or anywhere really. It is generally a different matter for the male species so you can imagine my excitement at seeing these seriously dressed up guys. Why the idea of a man spending ages thinking through their outfit excites me.....i don't know

Apparently fashion designers get away with allot. If you cant tell this is the great young designer Ally Rhemtullah from Tanzania. His personality is as bright as his clothingns and so are his designs. There were a good number of guys all dressed up. There was actually one guy wearing a jumpsuit with LADY gaga high shoulder pads. I didn't get to take his picture but make something up with your imagination.

Zege

A bunch of us decided to try out a local restaurant and of course we ordered zege. We had heard mixed reviews but thought it would be worth trying considering the meal is something of a local delicacy. comparable to katogo or rolex in Uganda. See this delicacy looks like a small Pizza when served while it actually is fries and eggs all mixed up to make a chapatti like meal... it is surprisingly edible. I say surprisingly because my taste buds have never agreed with the whole Irish/eggs mix (egg rolls) but i guess it worked. I hereby declare Zege edible so feel free to try it out the next time you're in Dar

House of Zirian

House of Zirian is officially my favorite design house from Uganda. I love miss Kyabakyi's brain for thinking up the most amazing designs. There is no picture here because my blurry bb photos would not do her designs any justice. I expected only the best from her as i had been awed by the gorgeous dresses she designed for the 2011 Miss Uganda. The collection she put on at SFW was out of this world and all you could hear were ooohhs and aahhhs from the audience. This girl is going places so watch out world. Look her up

When you work as hard as i do, its only proper to take some time off. Thats what im doing in the beautifull coastal town of Dar salaam. Swahili Fashion week also hapens to be going on here too so i will be attending that while here. It really feels good to get away...I have chilling, bikinis, food, water, relaxing and more chiling on my mind

It is crazy hot and humid here but that is exactly what i was hoping for.. I will be chilling by the water most of the time anyway. Id post a picture of me enjoying the sun here but im afraid to cause massive heart attacks so i will save your lives :) Take some time off to relax.

I was 9 years old when was i started caring what i looked like. A disastrous attempt with a relaxer left me with a mini bald patch somewhere in my hair. I was the small new kid in the class and i let one too many people bother me about it.

11 when i wanted so badly to be loved back by my cousin. My first major crush, I was not only consumed with the idea of being with him but also excited that i discovered and owned these feelings and could do whatever i wanted with them

15 when i discovered confidence and especially that my legs were hot.

18 when i first got properly kissed, He was cute, pink lipped and had hair i could run my fingers through. Not a bad introduction to one of God's little miracles

19 when i found love..An amazing journey

Somewhere in life i discovered i was capable of allot of things. many good but lots of bad too. Things some men would call silly and others out-rightly evil. Taking responsibility for my feeling and actions is still a major part of growing up for me. Sometimes its hard to do that and easier to follow my passions with careless abandon but.......

This is allover the place because so is my head lately. Reading my old journals has been so interesting and i know i should keep one just so i can go back to these moments and feel these feelings but i don't trust myself to be 100% honest even on paper so i wait for when im a better version of me....

Hello lovely Readers

I apologize for my demise from blogsville. Even i have missed you dearly. Running in Heels is the reason i have been so busy, too busy to blog. The Running In Heels campaign is being organised to raise money for an HIV clinic in Namuwongo Kampala. The clinic provides free HIV medication to thousands but they need all our support to do more. The major way to raise money from this campaign is through the SMS campaign. This weekend we will be at the Serena grounds kicking off the SMS campaign in style by literally Running In Heels. We will have different corporate teams competing in running races. The event is open to the public and even you too can register to enter the races on d day. Its going to be a lot of fun. There will also be VCT services so its another opportunity to be responsible and test yourself. The most interesting race i can tell will be the men in heels race, Yes big grown men running in Heels. Its for charity. Different celebrities including Sylvia Owori will sell off several pairs of shoes so its a shopping opportunity too. The event is a fun packed one and a must attend.

Catch all the fun this saturday at the Serena grounds, starts 1pm. Entrance is 10,000/=

All proceeds go to charity. I will post the details about the SMS campaign Friday Night. In the meantime you get ready to text to save lives.

Wedding Stuff

Hello people,

How have you been? Good i hope. I have been super busy planning a charity fundraising event and campaign called Runnig In Heels. Details later. So anyway i went to a wedding meeting this weekend and my observations have me thinking thrice about funding my own wedding. This barbeques styled event was not even called a wedding meeting but rather the launch of the wedding meetings. The couple are more of colleagues than friends but we share a good friend in common so i tagged along.

You will imagine my shock when at the end of the do we had raised over 11,000,000 shs (4000 usd) in cash and pledges. I was shocked, first of all that Ugandans are that nice and second that so much money was raised in such a short time. Quick math tells me if the couple have four more meetings then surely the wedding will bear profits.

Me and the hubby were planning on majorly financing our own wedding and have been saving up for it but if this wedding meeting business actually works, i might jump in the train. I am begginning to think my hard earned money should do more than pay for people to enjoy my weding. I should rather save it for the perfect honeymoon and let them (friends and family) pay for the wedding. Afterall its them that want to see me in a white dress and all. Im arleady getting the benefit of getting hitched. The party is for them so they should PAY. Do i sound harsh? Not my intention at all. This just makes so much sense.

I am realy slowly accepting the fact that i will have over 250 guests at my wedding. It sucks but someone said something about it not being just my wedding but his and our families too... As a peace loving woman i will let my dream of max, 150 guest slide but there will be no further alterations to my dream wedding. That being said i still need to figure out exactly what the dream wedding is??

Good news is i found a dress. Its beautifull. It actually looks like a glamorous summer dress, I love it, I still have to get it but as long as i have decided on it, i can sit back and chill. I have also decided to have six maids and open to more. I have also decided on a maid of honor and matron.

I am still bent on having my wedding outside of a church bui;ding. I would love a church setting if the church was near my reception area because i dont like that whole pee peee pee wedding cars thing. I want to stay at the hotel and do my hair, make up and everything there. Call me weird but i do not want the wedding photos with the 17 people that show up for the church wedding. You know how Ugandans (myself inclusive) are. we never go to the church ceremony, just the fun reception. I will save my lazy friends the burden and have both the "church" and reception in the same area, the marriage ceremony in the gardens and the reception in doors. I still need to confirm if this is ok with the church people where we will be getting married.

Writing this post actually makes me feel like im planning which im not so wish me luck and also id like to hear your thoughts and coments on the many topics that came up in this posts

If you are not aware by now there is a hair revolution going on. I specifically refer to the natural hair revolution among people of color. I have seen a number of discussions on black girls that grow natural hair. Many seem to take a high horsish attitude with the reasoning that a girl with natural hair is more in touch with her ethnicity, heritage, roots, self.. and is not influenced by the worlds' standards for hair (straight)

I wonder then how many of us agree with that notion. Do you think that by using a weave one is promoting the false standard that beautiful hair must be long, silky and straight like the white man's hair.

Are you natural haired or not ? Why do you choose whatever hairstyle you do? If you are natural haired, is it just a preferred hairstyle or something deeper.

Sheer has been trending for a while on the fashion scene as seen in many designers collection. The trend is not for the faint hearted and probably one of those that looks best in editorials and on the catwalk. The most popular is the sheer maxi skirt and even though im not sure i would attempt it, its looks mighty fine. I think the choice of undergarment can make or break the look.

Switch up your hairstyle by trying out different wrapping styles. In this one you wrap up your head leaving out some of the hair at the front or sides. I wrapped with some extra piece of Kitengi but a scarf or any cloth will do. Playing with head wraps is a way to keep things funky.

A good cover/concealer to blend in and smoothens the skin. This gives the illusion of a naturally smooth skin Lengthening water proof Mascara. Fake lashes daily may not be possible but this is

Gini my natural hair bee rocking her bantu knots as done by moi. To achieve this look, do two strand twists and then twist them further into a knot. Use lots of moisturizer, oil and some gel. You could keep them for as long as you want and take them out with your hair in serious curls. You could do them in any size depending on the size of curls you want at the end.

I think this style works for both natural and relaxed hair.

I've always thought i was sure of my stand on the matter of a wedding venue. It had to be a beautifull airy room with a rustic feel. Outdoor weddings were just completely out of the question for me -too much liberty to the weather, the tent decor always looked tacky, the couple always seems to be in their own little hut plus i hated going to parties and sinking my heels in grass and all that and more reinforced my stand on that

This past weekend we went to the Serena in Kigo just to check the potential venues and prices. At least now i can officially cancel that venue off my list -turns out there is only one hall and it fits a maximum of 200 people. it has a low ceiling and has a cramped feeling to it so that was an easy cancel. There was an outdoor wedding going on that looked so well done, it had me thinking about reconsidering. So maybe im not as anal about having an indoor wedding as i thought. i could make it work.>>>

I have also been thinking theme colors and i might be settling for calm yellows and corals. I know you're supposed to have some sort of contrasting colors but for now my brain likes those ones. I might throw in some turquoise later ..who knows. Even though i'm inclined to fancy anything with color, i have to pick the official ones now otherwise my wedding will turn into a children's theme park or something off Nicki Minaj's head and we don't want that. right?

It is unfortunate that not enough people have encountered the musical brilliance that is JAQEE. I first listened to her music about 5 years ago when she appeared briefly on the Ugandan music scene. She seemed to have disappeared as fast as she appeared though.

I spent the better part of this morning listening to this Sweden based Ugandan artist. Somehow work flowed easier with her soulful mix of reggae and other styles."Take it or leave it" is one of my favorite and i love KARMA below. This was actually one of the first ones i heard from her. I did not know there was a video till i found it on my africa is showing

Making Vintage garb work

So i had my shop and swap event last weekend and it went really well. 7 of my friends showed up with their stuff and much fun was had by all. I'm definitely having another one soon.

One of my friends brought a lot of vintage clothing, some wearable and others not so much. One of them was these long coral dress that synched somewhere in the waist. It was not long enough to pass for a maxi and neither was it knee length. Anyway it got left behind as nobody wanted it.

I decided to cut it into a top and it makes for the fanciest top as seen below. You wouldnt know it's from a few decades ago.

Two strand twist gone wrong and wedding stuff

I took out my braids last weekend. I tried to trick my hair into not shrinking by washing and conditioning it while it was still in braids. I think it worked. Because my braids were so long i cut them first to a more manageable size. I then washed and conditioned. Let the hair air dry and then took them out. I then did two strand twists that i kept in for the night.

In the morning it had worked and the hair was curly but because its short it looked abit like i was electrocuted so i decided to frizz with some water and sadly the curls went out but i ended up loving the final look even better.

The beauty with natural hair is it keeps surprising me, so now im wearing it as above but im sure it will keep changing with each day. I plan on braiding this weekend but until then no combing for me. Just a simple routine of moisturizing and applying gel to go.

My mum asked when i was treating my hair and i shocked with my plans of wearing it natural for the wedding. If you've seen weddings here then you know that is an abomination. I need to think up convincing cute natural hairstyles for both the giveaway and white wedding. Meanwhile the pressure to start planning is on but i will not give in until next year. The only thing i wanna do is figure out a venue and theme colors this year, Also im in search of a new married best friend. Apparently the maid of honor has to be married. I still need to go argue with the church people about this. Im not close to any married people so my mum might end up being maid of honor. Enough of the wedding ramblings

If you live in the Uganda area then you've definitely seen the ads with "GAIN BUMS AND THIGHS NOW, CALL 077........" They are everywhere and at one point it became such an issue that the police started investigating and arresting these con men.

First of all ladies, you need to learn to appreciate your body for what it is. Practice some self love: say to yourself "i love my body" constantly even when you don't feel like it. If you confess things into your life they will manifest eventually. Appreciate positive compliments from people, ignore the negative ones, you do not need them.

If you still really wanted a few more inches of bum then buy yourself a pair of high waist pants. Wear them and tuck your top into the pants, now watch as you gain an instant bum. I sound like im goofing around but the trick works. Now if you already have some sizable amount of Bum then its only fair to prepare for comments like "eee your bum looks hugggeee" Laugh it off and carry on enjoying your day

Brenda Nambi, the young designer behind the brand B'AMBI had her second fashion show last weekend. Until then i was not familiar with her work or style so i went to the show just to check her out. I must say i enjoyed the show and there were a few woww moments especially with the wedding dresses. The Ugandan fashion industry is just picking up and so its good to see people put more than just a little effort into their designs.

The collection was majorly made from kitengi and lesso African fabrics. She played with simple feminine shapes and created faboulous and wearable dresses, skirts and shorts. My favorite were the sheer / African print mixed outfits and ofcourse the bridal collection.

I did a horrible job with the photos but i can say the clothes look much better in person than in my pictures

Big Brother Amplified. 200,000$ in the bank, what do you do?

Hello lovely people

From this weekends' events, i guess everyone in Africa knows that Karen from Nigeria and Wendall from Zimbabwe won Big brother Amplified. These two youngsters bagged themselves 200,000$. I expected Karen to win because she was real in the house and i find that people connected with her on that level. Also Nigeria is a big country and people there really love their own so of course they voted like a problem. Wendall kinda took me by surprise and my home girl Sharon came fifth but that is all good.

This got me thinking about what i would do with 200,000$. I do not remember what Wendal said he would do with the money but Karen said she would share it with the other housemates. We wait to see if she will actually do that. I would probably invest in real estate and set up my dream business alongside other little material pleasures. I'm curious as to what you would with 200,000$. Do share.

I have loved Amy Whinehouse and her music since i discovered her. I can say i have listened to almost all her music. I remember going to bed in my university room to her back to black album. "Will you still love me tomorrow" is one of my favorites. "Stronger than me" and "fuck me pumps" are on my current desktop playlist. I am saddened by her death and she will dearly be missed. I can only imagine all the good music she could have made with that amazing voice.

I hope this is a wake up call to all us: If you push the devil hard enough, he will come through. It doesn't have to be hardcore drugs, all intoxicants when taken over a period of time will definitely be harmful to your health. Lets be kind to the bodies that God has given us.

There are several things you can do to get ahead in your business or career but here are a few i think are essential

Identify your interests, strong points and weaknesses. Work at improving your weak areas and also seek out a career or business that capitalizes on your strong points. Find a way to make money doing the things you enjoy and are good at. Think of an initiative that is not only relevant now but will also be in the future.

Have a vision and make short and long term goals on how to get there. Evaluate often to assess your progress towards achieving those goals. Do not be afraid to make adjustments where necessary and its a good idea to always have back up plans.

Learn and continuously improve your communication skills. These will come in handy almost at every point in your career or business. Be direct, say what you mean and mean what you say. Also be transparent in your communication.

Be Honest. This might be hard to always do but at least one should try. Avoid being a "yes man"( one who always says yes even when they know they could never deliver on their promises) You want people to think of you as being reliable than not. Deliver on commitments made and do not make any that you are unsure you can deliver on.

Better yourself on the basics including time keeping, negotiation skills, self confidence, presentation skills (add to the list)

Be ready for change and learn to adjust to it rather than letting it get to you. The only constant thing in the world is change so be willing to continuously evolve your ideas (business and career) and adjust according to the changes around you.

Enjoy yourself and find as much joy in your work. Even when things get hard you're allowed to be pissed once in a while but avoid that negative bug that will have you constantly complaining about your work. That negative energy is not good for you plus it will give you wrinkles and make you old and none of us wants that :)

There is so much to be thankful for. Personally for God and his unfaltering love, the gift of life, friends, family, love, good food, shelter, happiness etc. The list is endless. Take time to dwell on the good things in your life. See how much better you feel.

These are my new braids that i had done last weekend. This is my second attempt at these and i love them better than the first time around.. They are bigger and longer. My only hassle is how to pin them when i go to bed, the first few nights i spent about 20 minutes figuring this out. I have worked out a way to but it involves a scarf and other hair pins to hold them up and its still not too comfy. How do you ladies do this?? spill. I think i will be doing allot of protective styling so my natural hair can grow.

Wearing colored pants can be interesting in a good way. I originally had black pants on and something about a sharp cupboard lock and my curiosity and i ended up with a hole in my pants. It sucks because the hole is right on the butt and i don't think its fixable. I will figure out a way to patch it up, maybe with extra pockets or kitengi or something..:)Anyways i changed to these red ones and liked the results.

Its been a cool 9 months of blogging and for my 100th posts i just wanna thank you for reading, commenting and many a time making my days. Its been a fun experience, one of learning, laughing, sharing and i can confidently say i have no regrets. Do not pull out your tissues yet, this is not a goodbye speech. I wont stop blogging, i wouldn't do that to you :) I will keep at this for as long as possible.

Meanwhile i am now engaged, he asked last night and i said YES, of course.

Im looking forward to starting a new life and chapter with my Hubby. What im not thrilled about is the planning that goes into it especially the traditional ceremonies. I wish i could skip it all but i hear my ancestors would turn in their graves so i have no choice. Wish me luck..its no easy feat....Bride price, heavy extravagant clothing, crying at the ceremony, pretending to be a village girl...dramatic stuff etc

Im on the other hand very exited about my small perfect church wedding. This one i have control of so its got to be perfect, I will start welcoming suggestions soon.

I have an on and off craving for a baby. When i was younger i wanted a doll that was alive, one that was alive, one i could bathe and one that was alive. i wanted a baby but the size of a small doll. Whats not helping matters is being there for the birth of one my besties baby yesterday. Seeing a baby pop put "scars" you for life

Im currently working on a number of things one of which is an editor of a lifestyle magazine and also coordinating projects for a charity. its my little way of being an Annette of all trades. i think staying multi faceted is a good thing.

I have a great appreciation for the arts. Im a real hippie when it comes to these things.

I dont take fashion very seriously. i could be more daring with my clothes but i enjoy being laid back a little too much and feel like i shouldnt put too much effort into what i wear.(atleast not all the time). Its like i enjoy dressing up but i enjoy being dressing down even more.

I weigh between 58 and 61 kgs, depending on my mood and who asks

Whe we played childhood games , i liked to play the teacher and got the nickname "teacher"i do not remember this but my mother and the people who knew me then tell the stories and i can somehow envision them. This bag is making a comeback

Anybody who lived and went to school in Uganda 20 years ago must remember these bags. They called them busero (baskets) this is where you packed your lunch and break aka mid morning snack. I was in nursery school at the time and i do not remember owning one but most of the kids at school had one.

You can imagine my excitement when i saw this mzee (old man) hawking them near my kaalo (village) stage. I was on a boda boda (motorbike) but i asked my guy to wait for me so i could buy one. Im using mine to carry just about anything, food, drinks etc but i plan to use it as a handbag soon. its making a comeback ..lol

Finding out the woman you call grandma isn't your grandma. Neither is your aunty, your aunty. Or your cousin, your cousin. In fact 95% of the people you refer to with a term that suggests they're a blood relation are not.

Contrarily, you're often dragged to parties and introduced to someone you have never met who is actually your cousin, aunty or uncle. Due to convention you must then have a conversation where the starter question is "how is school?" No matter how school is going you say "good”

The realisation "how is school?" will be the starter question for every conversation you have with an aunty or uncle until you graduate. When you graduate the question becomes "when are you getting married?"

Going to parties and there's a high table for special guests. Ironically the table is often not that high. It's just an ordinary table covered with wrapping paper and draped with Christmas lights. At some parties there are more people on the high table than at the rest of the party.

Weddings usually begin 1-3 hours late.

Conversations that begin with rhetorical questions such as "Am I your mate?" and "Are you calling me a fool?" rarely end well.

The phrase "Can you imagine" never requires the use of your imagination because it normally follows/precedes a story told in vivid detail.

That embarrassing moment when you go to the airport and despite obsessively using the scales at home, your mum has excess luggage. The phrase "the devil is a liar" is used as an exclamation, response, question, and declaration.

That moment of confusion when you realise that women getting money thrown at them whilst they dance is considered objectification. At the parties/weddings we’re taken to, having a bunch of dollar bills thrown at you is called getting ‘sprayed’. It simply means you're dancing well. And if you're anything like me you've discovered it's a great way of funding your shoe fetish.....

Going to parties in school/community halls and all the drinks are in a big black bin filled with ice.

Living in a house filled with “Souvenirs” collected from parties means you can start the day drinking tea from a mug with a dead man's face on it. On the mug are the words "Chief Adeyemi goes to glory. Sleep well Daddy. Psalm 23:1”

Pretending to be dead after a severe smacking. Your parents never believe you're dead and if they do they either 1) Smack you more to wake you up 2) Leave you for "dead"

Being called downstairs to change the channel, even though the remote is NEXT to your mum.

Trying not to stare at that aunty who shaves off her eyebrows and draws them back on.

That awkward painful silence that envelops the room when a sex scene comes on TV.

When the ends of your extensions have been burned and keep sticking to your school jumper.

The first time you decided to experiment and told your parents to 'shut up'. What happened after is too painful to share on this blog.

Discovering you won't have a room for months because an 'aunty'/'uncle' is coming from back home and they're taking your room. If you're fortunate you'll be notified a day prior to the event.

Microsoft Word putting a squiggly red line underneath your name after you type it. Actually that still happens….

Your mum saving oil to refry food in it. So your plantain tastes like fish. Or your chips taste like plantain.

Your dad giving your schoolteacher permission to "cane" you. She looks appalled and politely refuses. He's disgusted.

Being threatened with getting sent back to the "village" whilst your friend Tommy gets put on the "naughty step"

"Dad I got 96%!!" "Where's the other 4%? The girl that came first did she have two heads?"

Going into the freezer, taking out a tub of ice cream, opening it and feeling devastated when you discover it's frozen stew. This still regularly happens to me.

hair update, a little growth

Hello lovely people.

Like i insinuated in an earlier post my hair is the coiliest of them all (please note that i did not say curliest) and probably the most interesting (read hArD) to manage. Anyways i did a complete big chop back in February so this is about four months of hair growth but my frustration is more of the not showing hair growth than anything else. I will bore you some more with a full video on this hair stuff later but here are pics so far.

Hello people

I took sometime this morning to have some fun with my new camera, its a little Nikon, nothing fancy but congratulations are in order. Check out my new shoes. I finally got me some brogues so that's one down on my wishlist.

Also check out my braids that i have had for the past three weeks. Meanwhile they look much nicer in pictures than they actually do in person. They are old and the lady that plaited me must have been off her game because many of the braids had my own natural hair peeping out, I could blame it on her but also my hair is too natural (4z). and doesn't quite blend with artificial hair. So i will be taking them out and attempting to plait my hair one more time, With braids again but this time they will be longer and i will use black ones. I will enlist the help of my sister because my hair is too thick. Wish me luck.

tusker project fame is back

Hello People

I spent last night watching the all stars tusker project fame. This new season has a few of the old contestants ( winners and finalists) from the different seasons battling it out for the top prize, yes again! Ive watched the show since season one so im familiar with all of them. Last night i got to watch some of my favorites from all the previous seasons and oh what a night of great performances. Clearly everyone has taken the judges and music coaches wise words at heart and stepped up their game over the years and months. But only so little as i dont see that much difference. The good ones are still good, same thing with great ones.

Muse with me here though, i wonder what the general point of doing this all stars project fame is. All these artists have been through the system, some of them even won the overall prize (Davis and alpha) , why again do they need to get back into the academy, they won ??? I feel rather strongly at this waste of an opportunity for other potential new talent. They really could have done better with this. I know big brother africa did an all stars so it must be the in thing but the contestants on BBA are not particularly talented and we could watch them act all over again. Im not sure it is justifiable with project fame. Are we going to watch the coaches tell them the same things they did when they were last in the house?? Still musing here. What then happens when someone who won the last time around stands out and wins again??anyone cry foul??

All this aside its lovely to see my faves like Patricia, Amelina, Davis and Carol back in the house. I love all the great African songs the contestants picked for last night's performances so i will be watching to dance and belch along, not so much to watch the nurturing of talent as i did in the past.

Hello people

I was busy attending an international dialogue and could not take time away to share my lifecapades, i actually missed you all. Over the past week i have interacted with people from all walks of life, leaders and youth from different countries world over but mostly Africa. Many of the issues discussed at the meet pertained to Africa and our future. They were several issues but i thought i would share with you something that stuck with me, the need for personal responsibility in ensuring a better future for our continent. Change really does begin at home.We are not always in position to influence policy on issues or the state of affairs but we control our own actions, behaviors, attitudes and so much more

Imagine an africa where everyone felt some level of responsibility towards developing their community, country and wholesomely our continent, working to the best of their abilities all the while contributing to economic and social development. I will not go into details but i hope you understand what i mean.

Strive for the best in whatever career/venture you pursue and be sure to always think of your communities and how you can be a part of positive transformation in any way possible. It does not have to be a top down structure to improve the situation of our countries, a small contribution from a focused individual can go a long way.

On a personal level i say to you African or not, get off your lazy a** and pursue your dreams, you just might be sleeping on the next best thing.

Firstly do not change your relationship status and under no circumstances should you remove his name from your "in a relationship"status because doing that will tell the whole world you two are not together and god forbid that point actually hits home. To desperately hang onto him, insist on the status and ignore all notifications from Mark Zuckerberg saying "..........denies that youre in a relationship" its a bad joke

Keep tabs on him through his friends

This is a must do,the boys will be essential in keeping you informed on all his movements and of course you will need to know this because eventually you will want to be around for that nasty meltdown when you find him with "new girl" you will be around because you will be the girl thats left behind when ex and new girl walk away from the dramatic scene...did i say hand in hand.

Reminisce (alot), day dream and fantasize about him

It is essential you create a shrine of sorts, keeping all past presents, photos, his boxers and hair strands if available.This will be a sure way to keep your mind on the good and never the bad stuff from your relationship. If all goes according to plan , you might even become psycho and refuse to leave the shrine. After a few months your family will have you instituted but that should be fun right??

Leave random personal items around his house

This may include but not limited to lipstick , jewellry, books and bras. If you have to sneak in illegally to do this then go ahead..Your new role in this mission to not-get-over-him will involve some under the bar stalkerish behavior but worry not its all for the cause

Say Yes to booty call

You have heard that breakup sex is amazing and the more the better so you must jump at any opportunity to get it on with him. By no means shall you think he is weird for asking and say no. The right answer to his question is ,when?? How often? where? Knock yourself out giving him the best sex of his life and smile to yourself thinking he is such a hard worker when he asks you to leave right after because he has an early morning meeting at work

Thats another YES for drunken calls

Have you ever wanted to make drunken calls confessing your love to non caring males on the other end of the line ...thats your chance right there. No way are you getting over him after that. This should be done over and over again

Keep in touch with his family

There is no two ways around this one, you just must call his mum all the time and ask to take his siblings shopping. Do all the fun things you and he did with his family while you dated. You want to keep that image of the two of your together alive so dont let his family go.

Offer to play house maid

That may sound negative but it is actually positive keeping in mind the goal. Offer to go to his house while he is away just to clean up after him and make him meals. You're a good friend and you wont let him suffer just because you two are not dating.. Consider it a nod on your culinary skills when he invites "new girl" over to share the food.

Note: Even though i highly doubt you will, try to have fun while you're on this mission. I could give you a few more tips but if followed to the tee, these should be enough to get you exactly where you want to be

The nail art ive seen around makes mine look like child's play but at least i tried. I do not usually paint my finger nails but when i do i keep it black or other fun bright colors. I played around with my nail polish a while back and these were the results

Natural belle did these cracked nails and i absolutely love them. They look really hard to pull off but i will try them out soon

You could also paint your each of your fingers a different shade of nail polish, preferably bright colors. That looks good too, just dont great your prospective employer with that hand.

Ive wanted these for a while and i saw a pair at Mr price but it was in the wrong color, I want mine in either black and white, red or maroon. Actually the two pairs above would be perfect. I have a pair that looks like this in black but has a heel. i doubt they are still called brogues though. Still im more of a flat shoes girl so i want me a pair

See i have short hair and i will be braiding it this weekend and i think those two hairstyles rock fedora hats really well so i definitely want one

Earring necklace

Just imagine wearing earrings so elaborate they cover your whole chest and basically look like a necklace . I saw these at a shop at garden city mall but they went for about 90,000 shillings and i was not about to pay that much so i will resort to making myself one or buy one when i travel.

I am going thrifting with my friends in Owino, the biggest market in Kampala tomorrow morning so il keep you posted on my lucky finds.

My lovely blogger friend Fafi from fashion phoenix and YNC tagged me in this. So here is my post.

I spotted this bag with a mobile sales man on my way from work and decided to buy it. It is Gianni Chiarini and genuine leather and i love it, one of my few big bags. The colour is a minimalistic orangy shade that looks better when old and not so clean.

And now the contents
My note book.
This is really important , i always carry it everywhere . I am those people who write down everything they have to do for the day , week etc . It helps me feel organised and it actually works. This notebook has different sections and i divide my work as such .I even have a section where i write my future plans , be it business or anything really. There is a list of my wedding songs somewhere in there, basically write anything that i dont wanna forget. If im not carrying a smaller bag i will carry a smaller version of a notebook
My shades , spects case
I live in Africa so its sunny alot so this carries my ray ban sunglasses. I use this case to carry my spectacles too, its big enough to carry both plus carrying two different cases is a bother and probably heavier. I mostly wear my spectacles them while using a computer but i have recently discovered they can be used to play and look serious while actually slightly tipsy at the bar..

I always have some sort of bite in my bag. Its crazy sometimes i will forget the food in there and only find it the next day when i change bags. I mostly carry crackers, crisps and of course fried ground nuts . snacks to get me through the day
A good book
I like to read while i wait in line at the bank, in peoples offices and in the taxi on my way home. I have only started reading this book so im not yet that into it or maybe im over these kind of books. I went through a phase where i enjoyed reading books by female British authors. The stories were funny and light, mostly about marriage, life, finding yourself etc i enjoyed reading them plus the animations on the covers always attracted me ,This is a book from one of those phases. On my book list are Bossy pants, Tina fey and the newest kitty kelley's unauthorized biographies. I dont know which one i just love her books
SELF make up bag
That is what its meant to be but i end up keeping other things in there, I rarely wear make up so carrying it is even more rare. I throw my flash disk, Lip gloss, Eye liner, bag holder, eye drops and bag holder etc
Bag holder/hanger
I dont even know what this little thing is called but you propel it to a table and hang your bag on it. does anyone get my explanation>? It comes in handy when you go out and you can find a surface on which to place your bag.
Handkerchief
I try to have one always. I was in a girls school for six years so i was told it was lady like . I think im more inclined towards wipes though and i will be sure to jump on that wagon instead,. For one they are damp n smell nice and also you dont have to wash...yes thats a plus.

The one about playing around and needing your help

Boring weekends at home are for playing around with old things to make new ones. I spent some time making necklaces i had been planning to make for a while . I also tried to make a skirt from one of my mums old kitengi blouses but i think i will leave the sewing to the tailors. After several attempts to get the shape right i gave up and decided i would take my measurements and material to a professional tailor. Enough of that. Here are the results from my playing around.

I had this stone from an old necklace whose leather string got spoilt so i just played around with some other string and metal and came up with a cute pendant. sorry you cant see it up close. I made it longer than the original so it feels new.

These wooden beads were from this huge elaborate necklace that i didn't really like, I took it apart and maintained part of it as a necklace and used some of the beads to make cards last Christmas season. Anyways this was a really simple one and im glad i saved some of these beads. I love it. Its gonna be great on all my bright colored outfits.

This maybe the most complicated one of the bunch to explain but i will try. So i cut up some old material into strings. I then knotted the strings at different points. With each knot i attached a pearl as you can see. I then arranged the strings to my desired shape of the necklace. I wanted three different layers that meet at some point. You could do this almost any way really. I decided to create a twists towards the end of the necklace and then knotted. There you have it. I hope you try this one out. I love the result.I am wearing it today actually. And my mum looked at me this morning and said "oh so you actually wear your stuff" Im not sure it was a compliment but i love my necklace so i will regard it as one.

On an unrelated note i got a phone call from this lady inviting me to some sort of private party. ....stop your brain right there, not private like that....Its a radio station party and the theme is Hollywood. I know a bit about fashion but in my brain Hollywood screams 1960s, 50s 70s Hollywood glamour. big hair, long slits, blood red lips, Marilyn Monroe, the amazing Catherine deneauve etc. The stars in Hollywood today are glamorous but also style is very personal and they all seen to wear what they want and so im stranded as to what fits the dress code HOLLYWOOD. I want to be a good law abiding girl so help me out ladies ..and some gentlemen.

I wore this on one of those workish Saturdays. I was helping out at a photo shoot for a friends project. I guess cameras make me wanna pose too so i took some pics of my outfit. Its all black and ordinary but my highlight really is my bag. I love it. I got is for about 5000/= in Owino, a big thrift market in Kampala. It was one of those chance findings.

I was heading home from work with a friend when we decided to run by the night street markets in Kampala. Normally it is not good to buy clothes at night (see end of the post) Anyways for by some chance we ran into this guy who was selling these skirts that looked weird from a far but since my friend n i are into that we checked them out . He had them in different textures and best of all the colors plus they were so cheap, 3000 shs thats about 1.5 dollars. I got three and she got two. I could have bought more but i had to pay for my taxi home so i sadly left some behind. Check out my loot

You could buy a really nice top and discover it has a hole or several only the next day. you could also find it has "pimples" (worn out)

You could also buy a cloth that was a certain color, at least you think and then get home and find that its a different color, faded and unwearable.

I tend to think that if your buying clothes at night ,people have already picked out the good stuff all day. That is not always the truth though as you've seen. Some markets especially street ones only prop at night so this might not apply too much.

The trick when shopping at night is to be extra careful also you can bargain harder since the day is ending and the seller is tired and wants to make as much money before closing up.
